Free and open to the publicJoin us for PlatteForum's first ever Resident Artist double-header featuring the works of Durham, NC-based poet JP Allen, who has been creating poetry for five weeks alongside youth from RiseUp Academy, discussing themes of place, translating languages as a political act and how to write manifestos. At approximately 6pm, both JP and the students will participate in poetry readings and an open mic; all are welcome to perform.Concurrently, Denver-based fabric artist Katy Batsel has been working with PlatteForum's very own high school ArtLab interns to create a medley of activist monster puppets. When Gritty the Philadelphia Flyer’s bright orange ice hockey mascot was co-opted by the Antifa movement, Denver-based fiber and performance artist Katy Batsel took inspiration to build on her existing roster of monster puppets to create a queer identity movement of her own. Building on the existing history of puppets to create protest art, Katy has worked with PlatteForum's own ArtLab interns to coach them in the creation of their own monsters.
There will be a monster parade at the reception, and the fabric monster sculptures will be on display through May 24th.
