ArtLab Fall 2009 Happenings
"Tell me and I forget, Teach me and I remember, Involve me and I learn."- Thomas Jefferson This fall ArtLab interns are working on Service Learning projects. The goal of these projects is to engage students in organized service activities and guided reflection: the service activities benefit students and the community that they serve with and, in combination with reflection, enhance civic engagement experiences for the students.
Service Learning encourages students to deepen their understanding of the community and cultural diversity through exploring the links between service and social justice. Through purposeful interactions with culturally diverse communities and organizations, students learn to be effective agents of social change. Service learning is distinct from acts of charity because it is reciprocal; students and community partners teach and learn through their interactions.
ArtLab's Service Learning project consists of four major components, which are: Integration of service and lifeskills to create an experiential movement for youth to learn. Professionals and community partners serve as teachers. Students are active participants in the community in various types of roles. Reflection is used as a guide for applying specific professional and lifeskills to service work.
This semester ArtLab is working with a local nonprofit called, Birthday Smiles. ArtLab will coordinate a birthday party for 40 amazing youth from the Samaritan House. ArtLab will be entertaining, organizing and teaching. In addition, ArtLab interns will also be mentoring the Colfax Community Network youth who are participating in the Learning Lab with Creative Resident Michael Gadlin at PlatteForum.
