In collaboration with University of Colorado Denver interns are learning in the arts with the guidance of professors as they will be studying social justice, learning script writing skills, performance techniques and build upon their talents throughout the summer.  Interns will foster their creativity while working along side UCD students who will mentor ArtLab interns in various capacities.  Interns will work out of the Black Box Theatre, bridging high school interns with university leaders.  They will have the opportunity to perform, work on acting, set design and stage management.  Interns will write and perform an original reader’s theater by the culmination of the summer.  They will rehearse diligently with the finale of work in a performance for the public at the end of the summer. In addition to their work on the original play the students will be working on a  Design Ignites Change project with Metro State College of DenverCreate! Don’t Hate. is a Design Ignites Change youth mentoring Initiative built around the theme of tolerance. The program gives the ArtLab interns the experience to work with professional design students apart of the AIGA Denver student chapter and design professors from Metro State University.  With the real-world experience, the students are using design-thinking to communicate their ideas, exhibit their potential, and take action in their communities. The culmination of the project will create several billboards addressing the same topics of social justice that students are portraying in their reader’s theater piece. The pieces will go on exhibition at PlatteForum August 27 and the billboards will be posted around the city of Denver in 2010.Below are the 2009 ArtLab Interns from left to right: JoseJuan, Jasmine, Miles, Saira, Ryan, Eddie, Yesenia, Levi, Josh, Haña, Andrea, Kate, Allison and AngeloCAMPAIGN FOR ARTLAB! PlatteForum is seeking at least 15 individuals, businesses or groups of individuals to donate $1500 to support one ArtLab youth through the Summer and Fall session.  There are 15 youth in summer ArtLab."Since I walked into the doors of PlatteForum my life changed. In Artlab I found a place to be creative, to express myself, and try new things… I know that by continuing in Artlab I will continue having that space that I never had before. And having that time to just be me."– ArtLab Intern“Growing up in an area where the idea of the arts is something that is completely unaffordable, ArtLab has given me the opportunity to experience a feeling that is unlike any other. ArtLab served me by giving me a chance to experience the world of art. It has opened doors for me that I thought never existed. It has given me the essentials to compete in this world and also interact with society due to the people skills I have acquired. I know that every skill I learn at ArtLab will help me be a leader in the world of tomorrow.”– ArtLab Intern
