"African Inspirations"In Residence: September 8 - October 4, 2003Opening Reception: October 1, 6:00 - 8:00pmExhibition: continues through October 4, 2003 Moyo Ogundipe, a prominent Denver painter, was born in Nigeria and fled its military dictatorship in the 1980’s. Before leaving Nigeria, he was an art teacher, a graphic illustrator, an award-winning television producer/director and independent filmmaker. In spite of all his creative pursuits, he has always considered himself first and foremost a visual artist. Mr. Ogundipe has his MFA in Studio Art from the Maryland Institute College of Art and his BA in Fine Art and Education from the University of IFE in Nigeria. His work has been shown extensively in Nigeria and in the U.S., including The Orlando Museum of Art, the Maryland Museum of African Art, the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, and recently in “African Renaissance: Old Forms, New Images” at the Denver Art Museum. He was the recipient of the 1996 Pollock-Krasner award, and currently is an adjunct instructor in painting and drawing at the University of Colorado at Denver. https://maigida.com/Moyo Ogundipe paints in the rich tradition of the Yoruba culture of Nigeria. He attempts in his paintings to evolve a style that is a fusion or synthesis between his traditional heritage and his western education.Residency DescriptionThe goal of the residency is to encourage and guide each student in creating a series of paintings. The artist and the kids will explore textures and techniques that can be used to achieve the layering and “flooding” qualities of powerful abstract paintings. Mr. Ogundipe will share how he uses patterns and brilliant colors to create paintings that honor personal and cultural stories.A joint exhibition of the work of the artist and the youth will be celebrated in an opening on October 1, 2003
