Throughout her residency, Katie Watson worked with ArtLab and TeCo teens, where the students created short videos that display imaginary anti-aging products “sold” throughout the installation. The exhibition opens at MCA Denver on Friday, March 5, 2010.  A public reception will be held on the same day at MCA Denver from 6-10pm. Teens and students are encouraged to attend this opening. Admission is a nickel for teens and students, and a dime for everyone.with some time on your handsevolves over the course of the exhibition, both physically and visually. The installation plays with the notion of time passing by showcasing a series of “time machines”—fantasy objects created by the artist to generate dust (or with a little imagination and humor, speed up time). Viewers are led through the Fox Family Idea Box as though they are taking a “factory tour” of the fabricated world where these machines are made. The absurdity of these objects’ necessity may not be questioned immediately, as an unnamed but omnipresent force leads visitors through the Idea Box with multi-lingual signage, animated images, dust-producing appliances, and anti-aging antidotes.About the ArtistKatie Watson was born in Michigan, raised in Indiana. She received her BFA at the Kansas City Art Institute and MFA in the International Center of Photography–Bard Program in Advanced Photographic Studies in New York. Katie Watson’s work possesses a sense of humor and irreverence that defies easy description. Her photography, video, installation, and print media explore construction, deconstruction, and reconstruction of space and modern consumer conventions. Katie's website.

* Confluence Project: PlatteForum Artist Residency + MCA Denver is a shared Artist-in-Residence program between PlatteForum and MCA Denver.  Creative Resident Katie Watson created new work and lead workshops with teens from PlatteForum's ArtLab and MCA Denver's Teen Council. The artist and students' works are exhibited in the Fox Family Idea Box at MCA Denver. This residency is the first annual collaborative project with the two organizations. Special thanks to: Bart Spaulding, Eye Candy Graphics, and Denver Screen & Embroidery for supporting this residency.
