We often hear that Americans have lost their sense of community. I wondered, “Have I?” Homes Within, Communities Without is a pair of digital stories, in which a young homeless woman and I each explore our experience of community—through video, photos, music, and words. Audrey Haynes is a writer and artist, too, so she shares her story in her own words. For me, community begins at home. For Audrey, community goes wherever she goes. She lives just two miles from me, yet worlds apart. Still, we share one important desire: to connect.Cara Lopez Lee is the author of They Only Eat Their Husbands, a memoir of her nine years in Alaska and her yearlong solo trek around the world (coming from Ghost Road Press in October). Cara is the creator of Girls Trek Too, an adventure blog. She has worked as a TV reporter, anchor, and producer in Alaska, and a writer/producer for Home & Garden TV, The Food Channel, and Discovery Health. Her stories have appeared in such publications as The Los Angeles Times, Denver Post, and Wazee Journal. Homes Within, Communities Without: Cara from Cara Lopez Lee on Vimeo
