Jennifer Maravillas - Bell
Collected Perspectives: Cartography, Belonging, Place and Identity
Nov. 9th - 19th, 2022
Regular Gallery Hours Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays 11-2 PM or by appointment at sstrand@platteforum.org
Exploring map-making through a social justice lens, Maravillas-Bell says: “Examining and understanding the tools of the powerful is key to creating an equitable world. Just one of the tools of the powerful, cartography, illuminates practices such as redlining and gerrymandering.” Maravillas-Bell has been creating a map of the area around PlatteForum’s Annex Gallery. She has been walking the streets surrounding, collecting debri from the street, and then impressing those found objects into concrete in the shape of each block. The result will be a large concrete map with found objects impressed into each block creating a beautiful mosaic of the inhabitants of this area. PlatteForum’s Artlab interns are creating a range of maps depicting their homes and neighborhoods using a layering technique, an audio map that tells a story of a place important to their identities, and a collective work connecting maps of causes and histories they’ve researched and examined.
