This fall, PlatteForum proudly hosted its inaugural ArtLab Alumni Program, culminating in a stunning collection of four solo exhibitions by emerging artists on December 13, 2024. The program provided these talented artists with a unique platform to showcase their work while gaining invaluable professional experience and mentorship—opportunities designed to open doors and elevate their careers in the arts.

PlatteForum has long recognized the need for young adult and emerging artists to have access to spaces where they can present their work, expand their resumes, and build their portfolios. This need was further highlighted through PlatteForum's recent Strategic Planning initiative, where youth and program alumni called for more opportunities to extend the organization’s renowned high school internship program, ArtLab.

All of the participating artists in the ArtLab Alumni Program are former ArtLab Youth Interns (2018-2023), and each has continued to develop their artistic practice since their internship. They were eager to find the next step in advancing their careers. This exhibition marked a pivotal moment in their journey, showcasing their growth and dedication.

The artists and their solo exhibitions are as follows:

  • FROM SCRATCH: A Love Letter to Soup, Garlic, and Onions by Axel Leonhardt

  • Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground by Emmanuel Balderrama-Moreno

  • Cracking the Egg by Jay Lynx

  • Modus Operandi by Zaida Sever

With over 50 attendees, multiple works sold, artistic recognition in a professional gallery setting, and community-felt joy, the event was a smashing success! Not only did the exhibitions demonstrate the artists’ individual growth, but they also highlighted the supportive and empowering environment that the ArtLab program provides to young creatives.

“I joined Artlab in 2020, a rather strange and difficult time for many but to find a community like that, especially at a time like that, was extremely beneficial. Throughout my time with Platteforum in Artlab I've been able to build lasting friendships, establish connections with local artists, and most importantly built up the confidence to see myself as a working artist and it wasn’t some far off unattainable dream.” - Emmanuel

Through mentorship, access to resources, and a platform for self-expression, PlatteForum continues to be a beacon for young artists seeking to develop and showcase their craft in meaningful ways. This inaugural ArtLab Alumni Program exhibition was a celebration of these amazing artists and a powerful reminder of the lasting impact of community and mentorship to support the next generation of arts leaders.
