Call For PlatteForum's ArtLab Lead Artists
REQUEST FOR PROPOSALSDeadline: 5:00pm, Friday, May 6, 2016
We are no longer accepting proposals. Sign up for our mailing list to stay in the know about upcoming opportunities. Here at PlatteForum we have always been at the crossroads where art and activism intersect. The exploration of the role art plays in our society is ingrained in all of our programming from Artist Residencies to ArtLab. We are looking for artists to lead PlatteForum’s ArtLab through conversations and responses to some of the most pressing social issues in Denver communities, nationally, and beyond. The idea is to explore the historical aspect of these issues while provoking a contemporary teen voice. Lead artists will collaborate with staff to develop an 8 week project based on the theme, Counter/Current. Lead artists will meet with ArtLab once a week for up to 4 hours. During this time the lead artist will guide ArtLab interns through the creative process, explore concepts and materials relative to the project. All work created during this time will culminate in a public group exhibition.Counter/Current is the theme PlatteForum’s ArtLab will be exploring this summer. It is about addressing social issues present in today's conversations while embracing the tools used by sub/counter culture groups from 1960s to present day. Think; DIY, mix tapes, zines, posters, performances, spoken word poetry, staged interventions, punk, hip-hop, and beyond. This allows interns to analyze through a historical perspective while contributing to contemporary discourse.About ArtLab: Based on best practices for youth development programs, ArtLab is an innovative year-round, out-of-school, paid program for high school youth that integrates the creative process and arts-based learning with academic, personal, and professional skill development. All projects address social issues affecting their generation which creates opportunities for youth to give voice to those issues. Each endeavor has clear goals and connections to the real world. This propels youth to become active members and catalysts for change in their communities. Our current cohort is made up of 14 youth representing 9 Denver metro high schools.
