Opening for Boom, Bang and Splat  |  December 13, 5:30 - 8 p.m. Free and open to the publicPlease join us for the opening reception to kick off Boom, Bang and Splat, an exhibition featuring the work of Hollis+Lana and youth from the Colorado I Have a Dream Foundation, on Thursday, December 13, at PlatteForum, 5:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.PlatteForum Creative Residents Hollis+Lana (local artists Conor Hollis and Amorette Lana) have been working in the PlatteForum studio for nearly a month now. Influenced by comics and the Japanese Superflat postmodern art movement, their large paintings seduce the viewer with candy-colored playfulness, yet each has a deep undercurrent of something grotesque. Murals are painted directly on the gallery walls, begging the question: are these paintings or murals? Sculptural three-dimensional forms, created with polyurethane foam and plastic, also occupy the gallery framed by the two-dimensional wall paintings. Considering the expansive qualities of time and the importance of context and simultaneous decay Hollis+Lana work in non-objective imagery that infers an illusion of existence.Their work is a visual dialogue between each other and the viewer and art. The artists state, “Much like the vapor of a cloud may conjure an animalistic form, we illustrate the importance of perception through form. Seemingly unrelated marks tell each individual a story of their own creation, and meaning is made through the act of perception. The collaborative process between artists as coding and the subsequent decoding by viewers represents the mesh of social and physical information that defines interaction in contemporary times.”Hollis+Lana are working with 12 middle-school-age youth from the Colorado I Have a Dream Foundation, calleddreamers, in intensive Learning Lab workshops. The dreamers have been exploring a variety of two- and three-dimensional techniques as they create collaborative pieces that mirror the working style of Conor and Amorette. The artists asked youth to think about their dreams and how they might be portrayed into physical forms in their work at PlatteForum. Individual and collaborative pieces appear in the exhibition.Special thanks to Gavin Sher for sponsoring our Learning Labs and also to Whole Foods Cherry Creek for sponsoring our exhibition opening reception. Learn more about Hollis+Lana's residency

Volunteer of the Month: Susan GoldsteinWe are pleased to recognize Susan Goldstein as the November Volunteer of the Month. Susan is an artist after our own hearts--a prolific artist and adventurous collector of all things amazing. A visit to her studio reveals layers and drawers full of old doll parts, monkey toys, Victorian postcards, yards and yards of books, and the flotsam and jetsam of people's lives tossed out and recovered. But most importantly her studio is filled with her art, photographs, and collages that express the world as she sees it. For the past 10 years she has been an ardent PlatteForum supporter, a generous soul whose spirit and kindness have enriched all that we do at PlatteForum. Thank you, Susan, our world wouldn't be the same without you.Check out more of Susan’s work at susangoldsteinstudio.com
Thanks to Whole Foods, Garbanzos, Coca-Cola, and XPEDXA very special thanks to these companies for sponsoring the last artist residency and opening reception for artist Melissa Borrell.
