ArtLab interns are paid a stipend during the academic year $150/semester and minimum wage during the summer. ArtLab youth work side by side with professional artists to create 3-5 bodies of work annually that are presented to the public. Youth create and present major artistic works relating to issues in their lives and communities, participate in service-learning projects, and mentor younger at-risk children during Learning Lab workshops. Families of youth are involved in key aspects of the program.WHO Underserved high school youth are selected for ArtLab through an application and interview process. We seek promising youth who have minimal extra-curricular access and involvement, attend under-resourced schools, have limited access to social supports, and who are at risk of dropping out of high school. Many ArtLab youth are the first in their families to graduate from high school and attend post-secondary institutions due in large part to their participation in PlatteForum's programs.WHEN During the academic year, ArtLab interns spend 3 hours on Saturdays at PlatteForum, which increases to 20 hours per week for 8 weeks during the summer intensive session. ArtLab interns are paid a stipend during the academic year $150/semester and minimum wage during the summer. In addition to mentoring younger youth in Learning Labs, youth serve as docents at PlatteForum openings and exhibitions. Most ArtLab interns participate in the program for 2-3 years.
