Denver photographer Anna Newell studied photography at The Art Institute of Colorado, specializing in photojournalism with an emphasis in editorial photography. During her schooling, Ms. Newell worked as an intern at The Boulder Daily Camera. She has worked with Future Self, a nonprofit organization that exposes at risk kids to various kinds of arts experiences, and also the International Experimental Cinema Exposition. While serving as an Artist in Residence at The Denver School of the Arts, she worked with the students in the areas of black and white photography, film processing and film printing. One of Ms. Newell’s recent portraits was featured on the cover of Denver’s 5280 Magazine.
Ms. Newell has developed a unique style of photography in which she approaches her subjects with curiosity and without assumption. Her work is best described as a mixture of eclectic environmental portraiture and raw un-altered documentation. Her goal is to let the personalities of the subjects come through as much as possible.
Residency DescriptionThe purpose of this residency is to compile a body of work showcasing the youth involved in PlatteForum’s Creative Residency Program from August 2003 to June 2004.
Ms. Newell will also lead a Learning Lab
on literacy through photography. Youth in this workshop
will be involved with a hands-on project that will
guide them in discovering their relationship with
themselves, their communities and their neighborhoods.
Four constructs will be used to do this: self, family,
and community and dreams. The workshop will employ
a mix of photography, writing and visual literacy
to help the students develop critical thinking skills.
Ms. Newell’s 3x5’ stunning black and white
portraits of the youth are personalized by the youth
using mixed media will be exhibited at PlatteForum,
along with the photos and writings of the youth.
